WSJ: U.S. demands that Turkey not serve Boeing and Airbus of Russian airlines

In December 2022, the U.S. warned Turkey that Turkish citizens could face imprisonment, fines and loss of export privileges if Turkey provided refueling and repair services to Boeing and Airbus planes of Russian airlines. This was reported by The Wall Street Journal (WSJ), citing sources.

U.S. officials also ask Turkey to extend these restrictions to the planes of the Belarusian airlines.

Export restrictions imposed by the U.S. last year prohibit U.S. planes from flying to Russia and Belarus without a special license from the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Bureau of Industry and Security.

The Turkish Foreign Ministry did not respond to WSJ’s request for comment. According to the newspaper, the warning to the Turkish side was made by Assistant Secretary of Commerce Thea Roseman Kendler.

After Russian troops entered Ukraine, the US and the EU imposed sanctions against the Russian aviation industry. The restrictions include the closure of airspace for Russian airliners. At the beginning of March 2022, Boeing and Airbus stopped servicing Russian aircraft. As of July 1, 2022, according to the Ministry of Transport, 77 Russian aircraft had been detained abroad.
